What are 3D televisions?

3D is currently becoming a popular media for industry to present its cinematic releases to the public, this done mainly as large scale multi million pounds block buster films. Unfortunately, to view these experiences as the cinema you have to wear glasses to get the 3d experience. People talk about the ‘3D’ experience without actually realising what the experience involves, they think the image is going to jump out of the screen at you and give you such an in depth visual experience that it makes the movie or experience more real. In reality 3d plays with the ability of the eye to do several thing give the images being portrayed more depth, viewing the image from different angles, i.e. you’re looking at the screen from a different angle, generates a changing scene, and finally the glasses we were talking about mean that each eye sees a different image resulting in your brain creating a 3d image as you always see one image from both eyes. So now we know how 3d works and that is started originally in the cinema, this idea has been transported into television broadcasting, unfortunately for the 3d effect to occur glasses still need to be worn, albeit at home.

What are the most popular brands of 3d televisions?

3D televisions are relatively unheard of the UK, with this country only recently switching over to a digital format for broadcasting. However, there are a variety of 3D televisions in the pipeline to be released into this country, that are similar to high end models of current LED backlit LCD televisions. The digital switchover from analogue has meant that the amount of data being sent via your digital receiver to your television is now possible and combined with high end technologies of quick refresh rates and good quality images means that 3D televisions will be the next big thing in television. As you would expect with the companies pioneering high end models of televisions, these are the companies dipping their toes into the 3D television markets and developing 3D television models for mass consumption. Namely these companies include: Sony, Samsung electrical, Toshiba, Sharp and LG.

What to look for when buying a 3D television?

When looking to buy your 3D television similar to purchasing other televisions there are certain considerations to take into account, essentially the difference being with 3D televisions is that you will need a television with high quality image and sound, the best high definition capabilities available on the market, good response times from your television and a high refresh rate. Essentially these are all considerations when buying a normal television but with the introduction of 3D aspect to it, if you are going to enjoy the experience you need the highest specification of high definition you can currently get, FULL HD 1080p and a high refresh rate in hertz. If you don’t have these things even with the best 3D television you would not get the best out of your viewing experience.

What are the most popular make/models of 3D televisions?

3D televisions are purportedly not going to cost much more than a conventional LED backlit LCD television as the 3D elements are not going to be an add on just more of an upgrade to the existing digital nature of the television and their processing capabilities. By this the producers mean that the Hz processing speeds will increase along with a reduction in motion lag, reduce noise from the television while improving sound quality and image contrast and clarity. Most of the current 3D television systems available on the market are high end models of traditional televisions that offer 3D capability. The mass market sale of 3D televisions is currently unavailable; however, a well researched search on the internet may allow you to be one of the first to own a 3D television for a little extra. Supposedly the next step for 3D television in the UK is the introduction of 3D based television programs and channels. As just because you have 3D television does not mean you can view all broadcasts in 3D.

What are the minimum technical specifications when buying a 3D television?

As 3D televisions are new to the market, there are not the full range of makes and models from budget to high end available. The 3D television although available is not available for mass purchasing, i.e. getting your hands on one may be a little tricky, so currently the choices will be between brands, if you have a particular favourite, rather than models. With any new pieces of technology you also have to take into account the considerations of both guarantees and the cost of getting equipment repaired. Although yes it is a new piece of technology, new pieces of technology always have bugs, so it is important to make sure you understand what customer support services are available, what the warranty includes (parts, service, or both) and how long this lasts for. Admittedly 3D televisions are going to be the next big thing in the television industry, but at the moment, what can you actually view in 3D? Can you view all your favourite programmes, your soaps, or is it just niche films that have decided to film/CGI their films in 3D? Is that what you want your 3D televisions for? These are the things to consider whether the benefits outweigh the costs of a new television if you don’t need one.
